How to Solve Displacement using s = ┬╜ (v + u) * t?

Here is the simple procedure that helps you to calculate the displacement of an object using initial, final velocities and time interval. Take the help of step by step procedure mentioned below to solve the displacement questions.

  • First of all, measure initial velocity, final velocity and time interval of that particular object from the given question.
  • Add up the initial, final velocities.
  • Divide the time interval value by 2.
  • Multiply the sum of velocities and half of the time interval to get the displacement value.

Formula to Find Displacement

Displacement means the change in position of an object. It gives the shortest length between two points. Displacement formulas are given as:

If initial, final velocity of an object and time interval is given, then displacement is

s = ½ (v + u) * t

If acceleration, velocity, time interval are given, then displacement is

s = ut + ½ at²

If the body moves with the constant velocity, then

displacement s = v * t

Where, s is the displacement

t is the time interval

a is the acceleration

u is the initial velocity

v is the final velocity

Example

Question: An object started its journey from place A with an velocity of 20 m/s and reaches place B with a velocity of 25 m/s within 30 minutes. What is the displacement of object?

Solution:

Given that,

Initial velocity u = 20 m/s

Final velocity v = 25 m/s

Time interval t = 30 minutes

Convert minutes of time interval to seconds.

t = 30 * 60 = 1800 seconds

Displacement formula is

s = ½ (v + u) * t

Put the given values in the above equation.

s = ½ (25 + 20) * 1800

= ½ (45) * 1800

= 40,500

∴ Displacement is 40,500 meters.

FAQs on Displacement Calculator

1. How do you calculate the displacement?

Obtain the required details from the question and substitute those values in this formula s = ½ (v + u) * t. Perform all required math operations to get the displacement value easily.

2. What is the SI unit of displacement?

The SI unit of displacement is meter (m).

3. How do you explain distance and displacement with examples?

Let us take a straight line having end points as A and B. If a person travelling from point A to B is called displacement. The distance travelled by person to reach the destination i.e point B from point A is called distance.

4. Write the key points about displacement?

Displacement is the net length that an object travelled between starting and ending points. It can be equal or lesser or more than the distance covered by that object. Displacement of a particle can be negative or positive or zero.
