What is Normal Force?

Normal Force is a perpendicular force that a surface exterts on an object. For Example if we place an object on a table the gravitational force will pull the object donwards. In order to prevent the object from falling the table will exert certain force to prevent it from falling. This force is known as Normal Force and is denoted by FN or N. Normal Force units are Newton.

How to Calculate Normal Force on Incline & Flat Surfaces?

Normal Force typically follows the Prinicple of Newton's Third Law of Motion. Normal Force is a force of contact. It is a Force exerted only if two objects are in contact with each other. When two objects are touching one another then they exert a normal force on one another vertical to contracting surface.

If an object lies on a flat surface then the Normal Force is given by FN = m*g

Where m is the mass of an object

g is the gravitational force

If an object is held on an inclined surface then the Normal Force Equation is given by FN = m*g *cos(α)

Normal Force Questions

Example: A Body is placed on a table if the mass of an object is 2 kg. The Angle of inclination is 45°. Compute the normal force applied on the body?

Solution:

Given that

Mass m = 2 Kg

Angle θ = 45°

FN = m * g * cos(α)

Substituting the inputs in the formula to calculate the normal force we get the equation as follows

FN= 2*9.8*45°

FN =13.87 N

FAQs on Normal Force

1. What is meant by Normal Force?

Normal Force is a force exerted by a surface to prevent the object placed on it from falling.

2. What is the formula for Normal Force if the object is placed on a flat surface?

The Formula to calculate normal force on a flat surface is given by FN = m*g

3. If the Object is at rest what is the net force acting on it?

If the Object is at rest the net force acting on it is zero.

4. Is Normal Force always equal to weight?

In majority of the cases norma force is always equal to the weight if it is the only force counteracting. If there are any external forces you need to consider them too by applying Newton's Second Law.

5. How to find Normal Force on an Incline?

Normal Force can be found on an Incline using the formula FN = m * g * cos(α)
